Le Domaine de Beauvais

An ancient fortified from the XIIIth century

part of Fontevraud Abbey

Beauvais is an ancient fortified farm that was part of Fontevraud Abbey for nearly 800 years. Originally built prior to the XIII century, Beauvais is situated on the heights above the Negron stream, next to Fontenay (originally a moated castle defending the road to Chinon), “Beside the old main road, which forded the stream at Beuxes, then rose towards the Maison Blanche, passing by Chargé on the right before reaching Chinon”.

Beauvais was certainly built using materials available locally from nearby stone quarries. The property remained a possession of Fontevraud Abbey until the revolution when all the Abbey’s assets were made the property of the state.

Recently taken over and restored, the Domaine de Beauvais now provides a comfortable cottage overlooking the garden in the central courtyard of this ancient medieval farm.

Abbaye de Fontevraud

……….Is situated where the regions of Anjou, Touraine and Poitou meet. The Abbaye is approximately the same distance from Saumur and Chinon, eight kilometres to the south of Candes and Montsoreau in the direction of Loudun. The Abbaye de Fontevraud is the final resting place of the first Plantagenets, which were initially Counts of Anjou, before becoming Dukes of Normandy, Dukes of Aquitaine and then Kings of England for more than three centuries.

Loire à vélo

Do you want to take a bike ride? Do you want to experience areas imbued with nature and culture? The “Loire a Vélo” is just what you need! It is an exceptional 800 kilometre long tourist cycle route, a cycle track that is unique in France; passing through the Centre and Loire regions of France. Imagine: it meanders along France’s longest river, the Loire, a valley of wonders whose banks house an inexhaustible wealth of treasures.

La Deviniere,Rabelais House

…located in Seuilly and visible from the Domaine de Beauvais. If one is to believe the book “Gargantua”, which is virtually a biography, Rabelais was born on the journey from Chinon to the Devinière. In those days, high born ladies did not give birth in town, but in their country houses. Traditionally the journey was only undertaken at the onset of the first contractions. The roughness of the journey along the country tracks also meant that the birth often occurred before journey’s end.

Built by the Cardinal Richelieu, it is a unique example of 17th century town planning in France. The town of Richelieu is situated at the junction of the regions of Anjou, Touraine and Poitou, just 20 kilometres from Chinon. Order and symmetry characterise this remarkably preserved ”ideal city”, a listed site with its 28 mansion houses along the Main Street ( Grande Rue), covered market, church, ramparts, its park and the remains of the chateau………. inciting you to come and discover this jewel of 17th century architecture and town planning..

La forteresse royale de Chinon

Like many Castles, the fortress is built on a rocky outcrop that dominates the river Vienne and the town. This strategic position gave the fortress control over the river traffic on the Vienne, a tributary of the Loire. At the heart of the Loire valley vineyards, you will be able to discover the finest wines from Chinon, Saumur, Bourgeuil, Saint Nicolas de Bourgeuil and Touraine.

Les Chateaux de la Loire

Azay le Rideau, Ussé, Villandry, Langeais, Saché are but a few of the chateaux in the Valley of Kings that are but a short trip from the Domaine.
